In case you’re unfamiliar with what in the hell I’m talking about, I’ll clue you in. In Team Fortress 2, the insanely popular online shooter from Valve, there is an unbelievably rare item called the Golden Wrench. It is, in fact, a wrench made of gold. It turns people into gold statues when killed, rather than leave a corpse. There were only 100 available to achieve in the entire world, and they were given out randomly by Valve. That being said, it is a very valuable little piece of digital weaponry and wrought with controversy. Our friend Jon Tran is going to destroy his. W…….T…….F?
Well, Jon (aka WiNGSPANTT) decided it would be a good idea to destroy his Golden Wrench for a good cause. He has been gathering donations for the charity Child’s Play, which tends to be very popular with gamers around the world. I donate a game every year for Christmas, but that’s absolutely NOTHING compared to what Jon has accomplished. Not only has he raised money by planning to destroy his own wrench on August 31, but he has gotten the support of 10 other owners to destroy theirs as well. For every 50 donations this drive receives, another wrench will be destroyed. As of this post, do you have any idea how much money this has raised? Any guess? It has reached over $20,000!!! That’s so amazing, I’m up at 3:30 in the morning writing about it. Oh, and here’s the best part: there’s still over 3 weeks to chip in before the wrenches get destroyed and the drive ends!
Once Valve caught wind of this plan, they threw their full support behind it. Check it out here.
