Hey gang, get a load of this! FireFall is an upcoming MMO shooter from Red 5 Studios, set to release sometime in late 2011 for the PC. Sure, it looks great. Sure, it has what looks to be great gameplay. So whats so special about it? Well, if you hadn’t guessed from the headline of the article, the game is going to be free. That’s right! Free to download and free to play. So whats the catch? We have yet to find one! We know that there will be in-game microtransactions available to players, but also that they won’t imbalance the game. So potentially, you could never pay a penny for this game and have a great time. How does a company turn a profit on a totally free game? We wish we knew. Maybe they’re banking on people taking full advantage of the real money upgrades in the game. I mean, if the game is awesome, I wouldn’t mind shelling out some money for cool new weapons and gear. Its not like I paid for anything else.
From the official press release:
The team at Red 5 Studios® includes a wide variety of talented individuals who have helped develop award-winning games, including the team lead for World of Warcraft and the lead designer behind the groundbreaking Tribes franchise.
Firefall paints a beautifully devastating vision of Earth, 200 years in the future. The promise of a new clean energy source, Crystite, leads to the disastrous arrival of the Melding, a hostile energy storm that engulfs most of our home planet. Earth’s surviving humans must band together in the eye of the Melding storm to save our species. Unfortunately, a new danger emerges as a bloodthirsty race known as The Chosen threatens humanity’s survival.
Its kinda like Starship Troopers and Dune had a baby and made it a game. If you’re about to ask what those are, shame on you. I don’t know what else to say about this. So I won’t say anything. Here’s a rather delicious video showcasing the gameplay of FireFall, as seen at the unveiling at PAX.
