After watching this trailer for the upcoming de Blob 2 a couple of times, its become quite clear to me that much of the gameplay mechanics can be found in the last few Mario games. Not ALL of it, but much of it. That’s not a bad thing either, because those games were good. In my opinion, however, de Blob 2 has two things that give it a leg up on Mario (fanboyism aside): an awesome soundtrack and characters that make me think of Day of the Tentacle. Thats reason enough right there for me to want to play it. This is not to say that these are the only things that set de Blob 2 aside from Mario games; far from it. This game utilizes paint in great ways. You’ll have the ability to sponge up different colors of paint to combine and form new colors (blue paint plus yellow paint makes green paint, and the like), which will be needed for certain challenges. Blob’s paint is his brush, his weapon, AND his life meter, so you’ll need to keep an eye on it and make sure you don’t paint willy nilly with no regard for how much you have left!
Developer Blue Tongue has combined many different play elements into this 2011 sequel, in both the 2D and 3D realms. As to whether these are seamless transitions or separate levels entirely is unknown to me right now, but honestly, I could really care less. The game looks fun, has multiplayer (1-4), utilizes the ever popular “bring color back to the world” theme, and made be bounce around in my chair to the music. For my money, that’ll do. It will be available on every platform except PC (per the norm), and it is being published by THQ. Oh, and it releases on my birthday. That’s like…. a sign. GIMMEH!
